Before a power plant can deliver electricity, it has to get in line for a study and approval process with the grid operator. That backlog is the interconnection queue. This page maps active requests still waiting in those queues, not projects that have already withdrawn or entered service.
The map draws on two sources. Inside the seven ISO and RTO regions (MISO, CAISO, SPP, ERCOT, ISONE, PJM), the numbers come from each operator’s own queue posting, last pulled August 10, 2026. That is the current active backlog for most of the country. The rest is served by about fifty utilities that run their own interconnection process outside an ISO, mostly in the Southeast and the West; those still come from Berkeley Lab’s national inventory through 2025. The two together cover roughly 98% of U.S. electric capacity. This build could not load a live feed for NYISO, so Berkeley Lab figures stand in there.
The queue is a waiting room, and most of what sits in it never gets built. The Being built view switches to a newer, nationwide source: the generators that have cleared interconnection and reported a target online date to the EIA, from the June 2026 monthly inventory. That comes to 286 GW across 2,295 units, against 1599 GW waiting in the queues.
Projects are placed by county in the contiguous United States. Some requests list no county, and a few name a city or a substation that does not resolve to one, so they are counted in the national and state totals but left off the map rather than assigned a guess.
