Verdagy
Verdagy is a Moss Landing, California-based manufacturer of large-scale dynamic alkaline water electrolyzers for green hydrogen production. The company's flagship product, the eDynamic® electrolyzer, is built on a patented single-cell architecture that adapts chlor-alkali chemistry to deliver high current densities, the largest membranes in the industry, and an exceptionally wide dynamic operating range. This allows Verdagy's systems to seamlessly match real-time variable output from renewable energy sources like solar and wind - a critical differentiator over conventional electrolyzers that struggle with intermittent power. The company operates a 2 MW commercial demonstration plant in Moss Landing with over 21,000 hours of runtime, as well as 500 kW and 100 kW test systems, giving it years of real-world operational data. Verdagy targets a levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) below $2/kg without subsidies by 2028, which would put green hydrogen at fossil fuel parity.
In 2023, Verdagy announced a gigawatt-scale electrolyzer manufacturing facility in Newark, California - the first DOE-supported electrolyzer factory to open in the United States - spanning over 100,000 square feet. The company is targeting commercial shipments from this facility in 2025 to support infrastructure-scale hydrogen deployments. Verdagy's electrolyzers serve hard-to-abate industrial sectors including chemicals, oil & gas, e-fuels, mobility, steel, and ammonia/fertilizer production, where cheap, clean hydrogen is essential for decarbonization.
Verdagy is strategically significant to the US energy supply chain as one of the few domestic electrolyzer manufacturers scaling to gigawatt capacity, directly addressing the federal government's clean hydrogen goals. Backed by Khosla Ventures since its 2020 founding and supported by a diverse roster of strategic investors spanning energy majors (Shell Ventures), industrial gas and chemicals companies (Yara Growth Ventures, Orbia, Zeon), mining (BHP), and global corporates (Samsung, TDK Ventures), Verdagy represents a rare convergence of deep-tech electrochemistry and American manufacturing scale-up. Its DOE-supported factory and California base position it at the center of the emerging US hydrogen economy.
Funding
Total of ~$103M raised across 5 funding rounds including a Series B. Khosla Ventures incubated the company and wrote the first check in early 2020. Additional rounds included a DOE grant and subsequent venture rounds. Key strategic investors participated across multiple rounds.
