Type One Energy
Type One Energy is a global fusion technology provider and original equipment manufacturer founded in 2019 by top stellarator scientists from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The company is commercializing stellarator magnetic confinement fusion technology - a design that, unlike the more common tokamak approach, has demonstrated stable, steady-state plasma operation, making it better suited for generating reliable baseload electricity. Their technical team invented the world's first optimized stellarator and built expertise through landmark experiments at the HSX (UW-Madison) and W7-X (Germany) facilities. The company's FusionDirect development program leverages exascale supercomputing, artificial intelligence, and high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets to pursue the lowest-risk, shortest-schedule path to a commercial fusion power plant.
Type One Energy's flagship project is Infinity Two, a 350 MWe first-generation stellarator fusion power plant being developed in partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) at TVA's former Bull Run Fossil Plant site near Oak Ridge, Tennessee - making it the world's first grid-scale, commercial fusion power plant project. In September 2025, TVA issued a Letter of Intent to deploy the technology, cementing Type One Energy's role as the fusion technology provider. The company has also formed the UK Infinity Fusion Consortium with Tokamak Energy and AECOM to pursue the first private-sector fusion plant in the United Kingdom, demonstrating rapid international expansion of its technology licensing and OEM model.
For the US energy supply chain, Type One Energy represents a critical node in the emerging domestic fusion ecosystem. As both a technology developer and an original equipment manufacturer, the company is driving demand for advanced superconducting magnets, precision manufacturing, and fusion-grade materials - building a supply chain that does not yet exist at scale. Backed by Bill Gates' Breakthrough Energy Ventures and supported by U.S. DOE grants (including the first-ever Milestone Based Fusion Development and INFUSE program awards), Type One Energy is a linchpin in America's ambition to achieve commercial fusion energy by the mid-2030s, with its Knoxville, TN headquarters anchoring a growing nuclear innovation ecosystem in the Southeast.
