Terraform Industries
Terraform Industries is a Pasadena/Burbank, California-based startup pioneering "gigascale atmospheric hydrocarbon synthesis" - the large-scale production of synthetic natural gas directly from sunlight and air. The company's flagship product, the Mark One Terraformer, is a modular unit roughly the size of two shipping containers that integrates three core subsystems: a proprietary electrolyzer that converts solar electricity into hydrogen at below $2.50/kg (a fraction of typical green hydrogen costs), a direct air capture (DAC) system that filters CO₂ from the atmosphere at under $250/ton (claimed to be a world record at time of announcement), and a Sabatier chemical reactor that combines the hydrogen and CO₂ to produce pipeline-grade synthetic methane. Each Terraformer is optimized to pair with a 1-megawatt solar array and is engineered for mass manufacture using injection-molded components, with the company having deployed 1.8 MW of solar at its Muroc desert test site and produced and sold thousands of cubic feet of pipeline-grade natural gas to utility partners.
Terraform's approach is deliberately rooted in commercial viability rather than subsidy dependency. CEO Casey Handmer, a former NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory software architect, has designed the system to achieve cost parity with conventionally sourced liquefied natural gas as solar costs continue to fall - effectively making atmospheric carbon a cheaper feedstock than an oil well. In April 2024, the company completed an end-to-end demonstration, achieving 99.4% methane purity and delivering carbon-neutral pipeline-grade synthetic natural gas to two utility partners at a $35/MCF green methane premium. By December 2025, the company had injection-molded nearly 6,000 Terraformer slices and qualified its sub-$100/kW electrolyzer stack. The company has also produced industrial-grade methanol, signaling a path to broader synthetic fuels beyond methane.
Terraform Industries is strategically significant to the US energy supply chain because it offers a path to decarbonizing the existing natural gas infrastructure without requiring its replacement. Since a large fraction of natural gas is consumed industrially - for fertilizers, plastics, pharmaceuticals, adhesives, and coatings - a carbon-neutral drop-in substitute allows existing pipelines, appliances, and industrial processes to continue operating while eliminating the net transfer of fossil carbon to the atmosphere. At gigascale deployment, Terraform's vision is to fully displace drilled natural gas with atmospherically synthesized hydrocarbons, making the US energy system genuinely carbon-neutral at the infrastructure level while leveraging the rapidly declining cost of solar power as its primary input.
Funding
Terraform has raised approximately $38M across two seed rounds. An initial seed tranche of ~$26M was finalized in January 2025 to fund development and deployment of the Mark One Terraformer at their Muroc desert test site. A subsequent seed close of $38M total at a $150M valuation was announced in May 2026, with Nick Galano and Shaun Maguire joining as board observers. Known investors include Climate Capital and Nat Friedman. All rounds have been at the seed stage.
