TAE Technologies
TAE Technologies (formerly Tri Alpha Energy) is one of the world's most well-funded and longest-running private fusion energy companies, founded in 1998 and headquartered in Foothill Ranch, California. The company is pursuing a fundamentally different approach to fusion than the tokamak designs favored by most of its peers. TAE uses a Field-Reversed Configuration (FRC) plasma - a compact, self-organized magnetic structure - driven and stabilized by neutral beam injection. Their landmark "Norm" machine became the first fusion device to produce stable FRC plasmas using neutral beam injection alone, leapfrogging a planned intermediate device and dramatically shortening their development roadmap. TAE's ultimate target is hydrogen-boron (p-B11) fusion, the cleanest possible fusion fuel cycle, which produces no neutrons and therefore no radioactive byproducts - a meaningful differentiator from deuterium-tritium approaches used by most competitors.
Beyond the core physics, TAE has built an ecosystem of adjacent businesses from its fusion R&D. TAE Power Solutions commercializes advanced power management and battery storage systems originally developed to power their fusion reactors, serving AI data centers, EVs, and industrial customers. TAE Life Sciences is developing Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT), a biologically targeted cancer radiotherapy that leverages the company's particle accelerator expertise. The company has been granted over 1,600 patents and employs more than 400 people, including 62 PhD-level scientists. TAE has built and safely operated five successive fusion devices, each generation improving performance and reducing complexity.
TAE's significance to the US energy supply chain is substantial and multifaceted. The company is actively evaluating sites in Alabama, Ohio, and Texas for what would be the world's first utility-scale fusion power plant (targeting 50 MWe initial output, scaling to 350-500 MWe per plant). In December 2025, TAE announced a landmark all-stock merger with Trump Media & Technology Group (NASDAQ: DJT), creating what would be one of the world's first publicly traded fusion energy companies with a combined valuation exceeding $6 billion. The deal provides TAE with up to $300 million in immediate capital to accelerate commercialization. By targeting hydrogen-boron fusion - fuel that is abundant, cheap, and globally available - TAE's technology, if successful, could fundamentally transform the US energy supply chain, providing dispatchable, zero-carbon baseload power with no waste, no meltdown risk, and no weapons-proliferation concerns, directly supporting America's AI infrastructure buildout and long-term energy dominance.
Funding
TAE has raised over $1.3 billion in private capital across 19 funding rounds, with total reported funding exceeding $1.79B. Key rounds include a $150M venture round with participation from Chevron Technology Ventures, Google, and NEA. The December 2025 merger agreement with Trump Media & Technology Group (NASDAQ: DJT) provides up to $300M in additional immediate capital ($200M at signing + $100M upon S-4 filing) and values the combined entity at over $6 billion. Previously achieved Series G and multiple venture-series rounds.
