Sila Nanotechnologies is a battery materials company headquartered in Alameda, California, that has spent over a decade developing and commercializing its flagship product: Titan Silicon®, a next-generation silicon/carbon (Si/C) composite anode material designed to replace conventional graphite anodes in lithium-ion batteries. In September 2025, Sila reached a landmark milestone by opening the first and largest silicon anode manufacturing plant in the Western world at Moses Lake, Washington. The facility, sited deliberately near cheap hydropower and local raw material suppliers, can initially supply anode material for 20,000-50,000 EVs per year, with expansion capacity targeted at 2.5 million vehicles. This makes Sila a uniquely strategic player in the US energy supply chain: it offers a domestically invented, domestically produced alternative to graphite anodes, the supply of which is currently dominated by Chinese manufacturers backed by state subsidies. By leveraging low-cost Pacific Northwest hydropower and US-sourced precursors, Sila argues its material will soon be cost-competitive even against Chinese-subsidized graphite, while also reducing OEM dependence on nickel and other critical minerals.

Sila's significance to the US energy supply chain cannot be overstated. It represents a rare case of deep-tech battery materials innovation - originally funded by ARPA-E and BMW - being successfully scaled to commercial production entirely on American soil. The Moses Lake factory positions the US to compete credibly in the global battery arms race, offering automakers a path to longer range, faster-charging, and lower-cost EV batteries that reduce reliance on foreign supply chains. Beyond EVs, Sila is already supplying material for drones, satellites, defense applications, consumer electronics, and data center/robotics markets - cementing its role as a critical-layer supplier across multiple high-growth electrification sectors.
