Scale Microgrids
Scale Microgrids (formally Scale Microgrid Solutions LLC) is a vertically integrated distributed energy company headquartered in Ridgewood, New Jersey that designs, builds, finances, owns, and operates advanced microgrids and distributed energy assets across North America. The company serves a broad range of commercial and industrial (C&I) customers - from grocery stores and cold storage facilities to steel factories, data centers, universities, hospitals, municipal agencies, and agricultural operations. Its core offering combines on-site energy resources including solar PV, battery energy storage, natural gas generators, fuel cells, and combined heat and power (CHP) systems, all integrated with embedded intelligence and proprietary software (Scale Atlas) for rapid project design optimization and high-fidelity asset management.
What differentiates Scale is its fully end-to-end, "turnkey" model. Rather than just selling equipment or engineering services, Scale develops, finances, owns, and actively operates its systems under long-term Microgrid Service Agreements (MSAs), often with $0 down for customers. Its in-house development platform leverages continuously updated data and a rapid scenario analysis engine to identify optimal project designs, while an in-market EPC network drives down construction costs. The company also operates Scale Capital Solutions, a financing arm that funds third-party distributed energy projects - accelerating the broader market by providing capital to developers. As of early 2025, Scale's portfolio comprised roughly 250 MWs of operating and in-construction assets, with approximately 2.5 GWs in its near-term pipeline - one of the largest pure-play microgrid portfolios in the United States - delivering an estimated $737 million in cumulative customer utility savings.
Scale Microgrids sits at a critical juncture in the US energy supply chain as grid reliability degrades and electricity demand surges from AI data centers, EV fleet electrification, and industrial reshoring. By deploying behind-the-meter distributed generation that bypasses long interconnection queues, Scale provides businesses with faster, cheaper, and more resilient power than the traditional grid can offer. Its January 2025 acquisition by EQT's Transition Infrastructure strategy - which specifically targets companies enabling the clean energy transition - validates Scale's position as a foundational systems integrator in the distributed energy ecosystem. The company's ability to aggregate, finance, and operate diverse distributed energy resources at scale makes it a key enabler of grid decarbonization and energy security for the US.
Funding
Scale Microgrids was majority-owned by Warburg Pincus prior to its acquisition by EQT Transition Infrastructure (announced January 9, 2025). Warburg Pincus led the growth equity investment and supported the company's expansion over approximately five years. The EQT acquisition - EQT's first North American investment from its Transition Infrastructure strategy - was executed using capital from EQT's balance sheet. Specific prior round sizes were not publicly disclosed, but the company closed multiple project-level financings to fund distributed energy asset development.
