Sage Geosystems is a Houston, TX-based next-generation geothermal energy company pioneering what it calls "pressure geothermal" - a proprietary technology that drills deep into hot, dry rock formations, creates artificial fractures filled with pressurized water, and extracts thermal energy for continuous, 24/7 baseload power generation. Unlike conventional geothermal, which relies on naturally occurring hydrothermal reservoirs, Sage's approach uses techniques adapted from the oil and gas industry (drilling, well completion, hydraulic fracturing) to unlock geothermal energy virtually anywhere on Earth. The system keeps the closed-loop water circuit under high pressure until it reaches the surface, dramatically improving energy extraction efficiency from previously untappable "hot dry rock" resources.

Beyond power generation, Sage operates a parallel long-duration energy storage business. The company uses surplus or curtailed renewable electricity to inject water into subsurface fractures, storing energy underground for 8+ hours to multiple days. When electricity is needed, the pressurized water is released through turbines to generate power - effectively turning the earth itself into a massive, grid-scale battery. This dual-use platform addresses two critical grid problems simultaneously: the need for dispatchable clean baseload power and the need for cost-effective long-duration energy storage. Sage's first commercial energy storage facility (3 MW) was built with San Miguel Electric Cooperative in Texas, and its first commercial power generation project is under development in partnership with geothermal giant Ormat Technologies in the Western U.S.

Sage Geosystems is strategically significant to the U.S. energy supply chain for several reasons. It has secured a landmark offtake agreement with Meta for up to 150 MW of power for data centers by 2027, has received U.S. Department of Defense contracts for geothermal feasibility studies at military installations (Fort Bliss, Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, Ellington Field), and is rapidly commercializing a capital-light "brownfield" model by co-locating at existing grid-connected infrastructure. By leveraging existing oil and gas supply chains - drilling equipment, well services, and subsurface expertise - Sage can accelerate deployment timelines and reduce costs compared to greenfield geothermal projects, positioning it as a critical enabler of reliable, clean baseload power for the growing U.S. grid.
