Realta Fusion is a Madison, Wisconsin-based fusion energy company that spun out of the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2022. The company is developing compact, scalable, modular (CoSMo™) fusion energy systems designed to decarbonize industrial process heat and power - sectors historically resistant to electrification. Unlike most fusion efforts that target grid electricity alone, Realta specifically targets "hard-to-decarbonize" industrial applications such as chemical refining and metal smelting, which collectively account for nearly 10% of U.S. carbon pollution. Their approach offers the 24/7 baseload energy reliability that industrial users demand, and the company aims to reach a commercially competitive levelized cost of $40-$100 per megawatt-hour.

Realta's core technology is based on the magnetic mirror fusion concept - a design first proposed in the 1950s and refined at UW-Madison through the Wisconsin High-field Axisymmetric Mirror (WHAM) experiment. The reactor confines plasma in a cylindrical "bottle" shape using two powerful high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets at either end that produce a mirror effect, bouncing energetic charged particles back toward the center. The company employs patented ion and electron RF heating alongside high-energy neutral beam injection to optimize plasma performance. The modular design allows reactor output to be scaled by adding middle sections with less powerful magnets, enabling cost-effective manufacturing. In summer 2024, the WHAM experiment set a new world record for magnetic field strength confining a plasma - a significant milestone validating their approach. Realta sources HTS magnets from Commonwealth Fusion Systems. The company is now working toward finalizing the design of its "Anvil" prototype reactor, to be followed by a full-scale industrial demo plant targeted for the early 2030s.

Realta Fusion represents a critical node in the emerging US fusion energy supply chain.
