QuantumScape Corporation is a San Jose, California-based solid-state battery company founded in 2010 out of Stanford University with a mission to revolutionize energy storage for electric transportation. The company's core innovation is a patented solid ceramic electrolyte separator that replaces the liquid electrolyte found in conventional lithium-ion batteries. This separator enables a lithium-metal anode that is formed in situ during the first charge cycle - a design that dramatically simplifies manufacturing while delivering nearly 10x the energy density of graphite anodes used in today's batteries. The result is a battery capable of higher energy density (~844 Wh/L volumetric, 301 Wh/kg gravimetric for its QSE-5 cell), significantly faster charging (full charge in ~15 minutes), longer cycle life, and improved safety due to the non-flammable, noncombustible ceramic separator.

QuantumScape went public in 2020 via a SPAC merger with Kensington Capital Acquisition, raising $1 billion in the process. Its flagship commercial product, the QSE-5 solid-state lithium-metal battery cell, entered B-sample shipment in October 2025, and the company opened its pilot production line in February 2026 - a landmark step toward commercialization. Volkswagen's battery unit, PowerCo, is a key strategic partner, having invested over $300 million cumulatively and agreeing in July 2024 to a volume production deal targeting 40 GWh/year. The QSE-5 has also been demonstrated powering a Ducati V21L motorcycle, illustrating applicability beyond EVs into high-performance applications.

For the US energy supply chain, QuantumScape represents a critical domestic node in next-generation battery technology. By developing solid-state batteries domestically - with manufacturing infrastructure being stood up in the US - QuantumScape directly addresses national vulnerabilities in advanced battery production that have long been dominated by Asian manufacturers. Its technology, if successfully scaled, could reduce US dependence on foreign lithium-ion supply chains, accelerate EV adoption, and provide superior energy storage solutions for grid applications. As one of the most advanced solid-state battery companies in the world, QuantumScape is a pivotal player in ensuring the US maintains technological leadership in the clean energy transition.
