PowerMatrix
PowerMatrix is an early-stage deep-tech startup developing ultra-efficient and compact next-generation power supplies for AI hardware and data center infrastructure. Founded in 2024 and backed by Y Combinator (Spring 2025 batch), the company's core innovation is a single-stage vertical power delivery solution that directly converts high-voltage grid power to the sub-1V levels required by modern computing processors - eliminating the inefficiencies inherent in conventional multi-stage power conversion chains. Built on patented circuit topology, embedded packaging, and novel magnetics, PowerMatrix's systems deliver an 80% smaller form factor, 50% less wasted energy, and 10× faster dynamic response compared to incumbent solutions. The technology targets GPUs, xPUs, AI servers, data centers, drones, EVs, and aerospace applications.
The scale of the problem PowerMatrix is addressing is enormous: data centers currently consume 5-10% of global electricity, with roughly 20% of that energy (an estimated 100 TWh annually) wasted on power conversion inefficiencies. PowerMatrix claims its modules could save customers $10 billion annually, cut 30 TWh of electricity waste, and avoid 100 million metric tons of CO₂ emissions per year. The company has developed working prototypes and is actively piloting with world-leading partners.
For the US energy supply chain, PowerMatrix represents a critical link between AI compute demand and sustainable power infrastructure. As hyperscalers and data center operators race to build out GPU capacity for AI workloads, the efficiency of power delivery hardware becomes a strategic bottleneck. By dramatically reducing energy waste at the chip level, PowerMatrix's vertical power delivery modules could help the US reduce grid strain from AI-driven data center growth, improve energy security, and maintain competitiveness in AI infrastructure - making it a highly relevant player in the intersection of semiconductor hardware, power electronics, and the broader energy supply chain.
