Nuvola Technology is a Los Angeles-based battery materials startup developing SafeCoat™ DDS (Direct Deposition Separator), a spray-on battery separator platform that fundamentally reimagines how lithium-ion batteries are manufactured. Rather than relying on conventional plastic film separators - which require dedicated, capital-intensive billion-dollar separator factories - Nuvola's SafeCoat process sprays a porous polymer directly onto electrodes in a single roll-to-roll manufacturing step. The result is a thinner, more uniform separator that integrates seamlessly into existing production lines and dramatically simplifies the battery supply chain. With 9 global patents issued since 2018 covering material formulations, deposition processes, and cell designs across the U.S., Europe, and Asia, Nuvola has built a strong IP moat in a critical segment of battery manufacturing.

SafeCoat's headline achievement is a verified 99% reduction in fire risk, confirmed at 220°C, including passing rigorous nail penetration testing without triggering thermal runaway - one of the most dangerous and destructive failure modes in lithium-ion batteries. The technology addresses a root cause of battery fires by fully encapsulating electrode edges, where short circuits most commonly originate. Beyond safety, SafeCoat delivers a boost in energy density from its ultra-thin profile and enables capital-light scalability: a single pilot line can be replicated to reach 40 GWh/year of production with minimal additional investment. Founded by UCLA-trained electrochemists Dr. Janet Hur and Dr. Leland Smith, Nuvola was selected by Y Combinator early in its journey and has since engaged leading global EV makers and cell manufacturers in joint evaluations and pilot programs, with full pilot production targeted for 2026.

For the U.S. energy supply chain, Nuvola's significance is profound. Battery separators are a chokepoint in domestic battery manufacturing - currently dominated by Asian suppliers - and SafeCoat offers a path to producing safer, higher-performance cells without the need for standalone separator factories. As demand surges across EVs, grid-scale BESS, AI data center power, robotics, and aerospace, the pressure on cell makers to improve safety while reducing cost is intensifying. Nuvola's capital-efficient, drop-in approach allows U.S. battery manufacturers to leapfrog traditional separator supply chains, enhance domestic energy resilience, and meet increasingly stringent global safety standards - making it a key enabler of America's battery independence strategy.
