Mainspring Energy
Mainspring Energy is a Menlo Park, CA-based power infrastructure company that has pioneered a fundamentally new category of electricity generation: the Linear Generator. Unlike traditional rotary generators or gas turbines that rely on combustion and rotating machinery, Mainspring's Linear Generator uses a linear (back-and-forth) piston motion driven by a low-temperature, flameless chemical reaction to produce electricity. This approach achieves 46% electrical efficiency and ultra-low NOx emissions (below 1.5 ppm), meeting even the most stringent air quality standards. The system is fuel-flexible, capable of running on natural gas, hydrogen, biogas, propane, or ammonia - with no hardware changes - making it uniquely positioned to transition from today's fossil fuels to tomorrow's zero-carbon energy sources.
The Mainspring Linear Generator targets four major markets: utilities, data centers, enterprise, and industrial customers. Its modular, factory-built design allows for rapid permitting and deployment - often within months, not years - which is critical for capacity-constrained customers facing surging power demand, especially from AI and data center workloads. The system is fully dispatchable (0-100% output), can operate grid-independent or grid-parallel, and provides resilience against grid outages. With over 1 GW in late-stage development and operation, the company has earned the trust of Fortune 500 companies, utilities, and major data center developers across the US.
Mainspring is a significant player in the US energy supply chain because it offers a domestically manufactured, distributed power generation solution that addresses key grid reliability and decarbonization challenges simultaneously. As the US faces unprecedented electricity demand growth from AI infrastructure, EV adoption, and industrial electrification, Mainspring's flexible and fast-deployable linear generators serve as a critical bridge between the aging centralized grid and future clean energy systems. The company is backed by a blue-chip roster of strategic investors including utilities (NextEra Energy, American Electric Power), energy majors (Shell, Chevron), hyperscalers (Amazon Climate Pledge Fund), and leading climate tech venture firms, underscoring its strategic importance across the entire energy value chain.
Funding
Mainspring has raised funding across at least 8 rounds. Most recently, a Series F of $258M was closed in May 2025 with 10 investors. Prior to that, a $87M grant was awarded in November 2024. Earlier rounds include a Series D and Series E backed by strategic and financial investors. The company is backed by Khosla Ventures, General Catalyst, Gates Frontier Fund, Lightrock, Princeville Capital, ClearSky, Amazon Climate Pledge Fund, NextEra Energy, Shell, American Electric Power, Chevron, and DCVC, among others.
