Focused Energy is a US-German fusion energy company founded in 2021 that is commercializing laser-driven inertial confinement fusion (ICF) - the same scientific approach that achieved historic ignition at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's National Ignition Facility (NIF) that same year. The company was founded by the scientists who contributed to that ignition breakthrough and is now led by engineers focused on turning that scientific milestone into a commercial power plant. Their core technology is direct-drive laser fusion, in which high-powered lasers compress and ignite a fusion fuel target to release net energy. Focused Energy operates R&D hubs in Austin, TX (USA) and Darmstadt/Berlin, Germany, with plans to build their first full-scale laser system at a site in Biblis, Germany by 2028.

Focused Energy's roadmap targets a pilot plant by 2035 and delivery of the first grid megawatt-hours by 2037. In addition to its power plant ambitions, the company is developing adjacent applications of its laser-fusion technology, including SourceLight - a spin-off focused on laser-based neutron sources for industrial use. The team of 160+ engineers, scientists, and operators draws heavily from elite institutions including NIF, the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE), and ASML, giving the company deep technical credibility across laser physics, target science, and precision manufacturing.

Focused Energy is highly significant to the US energy supply chain as one of the most advanced private fusion ventures globally, with both private venture capital and government backing totaling over $400M. Its Series A of $240M - one of the largest single fusion funding rounds ever announced - signals strong institutional confidence in its commercialization path. By bridging US and European fusion expertise and targeting grid-scale power production, Focused Energy represents a potential cornerstone of a carbon-free, fuel-independent energy future, with implications for domestic energy security, advanced manufacturing, and US competitiveness in the global fusion race.
