Endurance Energy is a Seattle, WA-based energy startup pioneering subsea geothermal power generation - the first company to pursue harnessing Earth's internal heat directly from the ocean floor. Founded by SpaceX alumnus Andrew Redd, the company targets mid-ocean ridge spreading zones and volcanic seamounts where tectonic plates pull apart and magma rises close to the seafloor, creating ideal conditions for high-temperature geothermal energy extraction. Unlike land-based geothermal startups that must drill thousands of feet into the Earth's crust, Endurance's technology leverages the ocean's natural geology to access heat far more efficiently, with zero surface footprint as both generation and transmission equipment lives entirely on or beneath the seafloor.

Endurance's technology draws on proven oil & gas and geothermal engineering, adapted for deep-sea deployment. Their modular, scalable design enables factory production of small power units that can be clustered to gigawatt scale - a key differentiator that allows installations in months rather than years. The company's first milestone is the "Adélie" system: a planned 100 kW subsea power unit scheduled for deployment in September 2026 inside the Axial Seamount caldera off the Oregon coast, where it will connect to the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) Regional Cabled Array. The company estimates up to 6 terawatts of developable geothermal potential around the Pacific Rim's Ring of Fire alone.

Endurance Energy is strategically significant to the US energy supply chain as it addresses the growing baseload power deficit driven by AI data centers, EV adoption, and industrial electrification. Subsea geothermal offers 24/7 renewable power - unlike solar and wind - without the land-use, permitting, and fuel-supply constraints of conventional generation. With international partnerships already underway (including a deployment agreement with the Government of Tonga), Endurance is positioning the US as a leader in a new class of offshore energy infrastructure. The team of 25, with 12 SpaceX alumni, brings deep hardware and systems engineering expertise to what could become a multi-terawatt clean energy platform for both domestic grids and Pacific island nations.
