Clairity Technology

Clairity Technology is a Los Angeles-based direct air capture (DAC) startup founded in 2022 by Glen Meyerowitz, a former SpaceX engineer. The company is developing a cost-effective approach to removing CO₂ directly from the atmosphere at gigaton scale. Unlike most DAC competitors that pursue ultra-high purity CO₂ streams (99%+), Clairity deliberately targets an "80% purity" threshold - a "good enough" engineering philosophy that allows the use of lower-cost materials, simpler construction (analogous to building an apartment rather than a lab), and ultimately dramatically reduces capital expenditure. Their solid sorbent system uses honeycomb ceramic monoliths coated with widely abundant alkali carbonate salts (like sodium or potassium carbonate) to selectively bind CO₂, which is then concentrated into an enriched stream.

Once CO₂ is captured, Clairity employs ex-situ mineralization as its primary sequestration pathway - permanently locking carbon into concrete, rocks, or other solid materials, which also improves the strength and quality of those materials. This dual approach of DAC + ex-situ mineralization eliminates the need for underground injection, reducing project and regulatory risk. In March 2025, Clairity brought online "Project Juniper" in Southern Nevada - the first integrated DAC + ex-situ mineralization plant in the world and the first DAC facility in the United States designed to issue independently verified carbon credits. The pilot captures approximately 100 tons of CO₂ per year. The company has already partnered with carbon concrete startup CarbonBuilt and plans to scale modularly toward gigaton removal capacity.

Clairity matters to the US energy supply chain as a key enabling technology for deep decarbonization. The US Inflation Reduction Act provides up to $180/ton in tax credits for permanently sequestered DAC carbon, creating a viable economic pathway. As the energy sector transitions, carbon removal will be a critical industrial service - particularly for hard-to-abate sectors - and Clairity's cost-reduction approach through commoditized materials and modular equipment positions it as a potentially transformative player in building out affordable, scalable carbon removal infrastructure in North America.
