American Battery Technology Company (ABTC), headquartered in Reno, Nevada and traded on NASDAQ as ABAT, is a fully integrated critical battery materials company built around three core pillars: lithium-ion battery recycling, primary battery metal extraction technologies, and primary resource development. At its 137,000 sq ft commercial recycling facility at the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center (TRIC), ABTC processes end-of-life lithium-ion batteries from electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and grid storage systems, recovering battery-grade lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese using proprietary closed-loop recycling processes. Concurrently, the company is developing the Tonopah Flats Lithium Project - one of the largest known lithium claystone deposits in the United States, spanning over 10,340 acres near Tonopah, Nevada - with an estimated inferred resource of 15.8 million tons of lithium carbonate equivalent and a projected lifetime after-tax NPV of $2.57 billion.

ABTC's technological edge lies in its internally developed, first-of-kind processing methods. Its proprietary Selective Leach Extraction (SLE) process for primary lithium manufacturing offers a lower-cost, lower-acid, lower-contaminant alternative to conventional evaporation-based techniques. The company has already demonstrated the manufacture of battery-cathode-grade lithium hydroxide from Nevada-based claystone at its integrated demonstration facility co-located at the University of Nevada, Reno's Nevada Center for Applied Research (NCAR). For recycling, ABTC has partnered with BASF and C4V through a DOE/US Advanced Battery Consortium collaboration to demonstrate that battery-grade metals recovered from recycled materials can meet or exceed the quality and cost profile of virgin-sourced metals. ABTC has also partnered with engineering giant Black & Veatch for EPC of its commercial-scale lithium hydroxide refinery, and with Call2Recycle to expand consumer battery recycling nationwide.

ABTC is a critical node in the US domestic energy supply chain at a time when less than 1% of global battery metal manufacturing capacity resides within the United States. The company addresses both the upstream supply gap (domestic lithium from Nevada claystone) and the circular economy gap (recycling end-of-life batteries back to cathode-grade inputs), effectively closing the loop on the battery materials cycle. Its multi-Administration DOE support - spanning grants from both Trump and Biden administrations, and now a successfully appealed and reinstated $115 million grant under the second Trump Administration - underscores its strategic importance to US energy dominance and national security. The Tonopah Flats project was also designated a Priority Project by the White House's National Energy Dominance Council (NEDC) for fast-tracked federal permitting in June 2025.

Funding

ABTC has raised funding across 12 rounds per Crunchbase, predominantly through U.S. Department of Energy grants. Key grants include: a DOE grant from the first Trump Administration (Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office) for bench-scale development; a $57M DOE grant contract awarded September 2023 (Biden Administration, via Bipartisan Infrastructure Law) for the construction of its commercial-scale lithium hydroxide refinery at Tonopah; and a separately awarded $150M DOE grant for its second lithium-ion battery recycling facility. The $115M project-level grant (a subset/phase of the broader DOE Tonopah refinery award) was terminated in October 2025 along with hundreds of other DOE grants, then successfully appealed and fully reinstated in June 2026 under the second Trump Administration. The company is publicly traded on NASDAQ (ABAT), previously on OTCQX/OTCQB as ABML.
