Aalo Atomics
Aalo Atomics is an Austin, Texas-based nuclear reactor company founded in 2023 that is building mass-manufactured, modular nuclear power plants. The company's flagship product, the **Aalo Pod**, is a 50 MWe modular nuclear power plant designed specifically for data centers and large industrial customers. Its second product, the **Aalo-1**, is a 10 MWe thermal neutron spectrum, sodium-cooled micro-reactor fueled with LEU+ UZrH, engineered for factory fabrication and commercial deployment. A key design philosophy is constraining reactor size to what can be shipped by truck, enabling true factory production and on-site modular assembly - a fundamentally different approach from traditional large-scale nuclear megaprojects.
Aalo Atomics has rapidly advanced from concept to physical hardware, constructing a **Critical Test Reactor (CTR)** in Idaho, which received its authorization to go online after a visit and live signing by U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright. The CTR is part of the Department of Energy's Reactor Pilot Program and is noted as one of the fastest reactor builds in modern American history. The company is actively working toward its Aalo-X 10 MWe power plant site targeting power operations in 2027, and is operating in alignment with Executive Order 14301, which directs at least three American-made advanced nuclear reactors to achieve criticality by July 4th as part of a broader mission to quadruple U.S. nuclear capacity by 2050.
Aalo Atomics is significant to the U.S. energy supply chain because it applies a manufacturing-first mindset - drawing talent from SpaceX, Tesla, and Bloom Energy - to an industry historically defined by one-off construction projects. By targeting sub-10¢/kWh economics (with an ambition of 3¢/kWh), the company aims to make nuclear power viable for AI data centers, industrial heat, desalination, and synthetic fuels. Having grown from 2 to over 165 employees in roughly three years and raised more than $300M, Aalo Atomics represents one of the most well-capitalized and operationally advanced entrants in the new wave of advanced nuclear startups.
