6K Energy
6K Energy is the battery materials division of 6K Inc., a North Andover, Massachusetts-based advanced materials company. The company has developed and commercialized UniMelt®, a proprietary microwave plasma system that operates at 6,000 Kelvin (the temperature of the sun's surface - hence "6K") to produce lithium-ion battery cathode active materials (CAM) including NMC and LFP chemistries. Unlike conventional chemical co-precipitation (hydro-met) processes that require up to 3 days and generate significant hazardous liquid and solid waste, UniMelt completes production in under 2 seconds in a single, ultra-clean step. The technology reduces energy consumption by up to 70%, eliminates wastewater entirely, cuts water use by 90%, and achieves 99.999% contamination-free output - while operating at half the CapEx and conversion cost of traditional CAM plants.
What distinguishes 6K Energy in the US energy supply chain is its ability to produce IRA-compliant cathode materials entirely on American soil - and at costs claimed to be competitive with or lower than Asian producers. The company's circular economy model uses domestic scrap metals, used batteries, and recycled feedstocks, addressing both national security concerns around critical mineral dependence and the environmental cost of mining. 6K Energy operates a Battery Center of Excellence in North Andover, MA (capable of 1 ton/month of CAM), and is constructing its first full-scale PlusCAM™ battery material manufacturing plant in Jackson, Tennessee, supported by a $50M Department of Energy grant. The company also holds a $1.9M Defense Logistics Agency R&D grant and has received a $107M DOE award for a domestic plasma processing plant, underscoring its dual-use strategic importance for both civilian EV battery supply chains and defense applications.
6K Inc. operates two commercial divisions - 6K Energy (batteries) and 6K Additive (metal powders for 3D printing) - and has grown to nearly 500 employees across facilities in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee. Its plasma platform has attracted major institutional and strategic investors, high-profile government backing, and recognitions from Forbes, Time Magazine, Fast Company, and the Global Cleantech 100. As the US works to onshore critical battery material production previously dominated by China and South Korea, 6K Energy represents one of the most technologically differentiated and commercially advanced domestic solutions in the cathode materials segment.
